PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. –

The search for a man who fell from a cruise ship on Thursday has been suspended, Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed to WESH 2.

A 51-year-old man, whose name has not been released, fell overboard at 3pm and the search was called off later that night.

The man was on board the Norwegian Epic cruise ship in the Bahamas.

“Authorities were immediately notified and a search and rescue operation was initiated under the direction and supervision of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center,” a Norwegian Cruise spokesperson told WESH. “After an extensive search, which unfortunately was unsuccessful, the ship was released.” The authorities asked her to continue her journey.

The shipping company said the man was traveling with a large group and his family on board “is being cared for and supported in this very challenging situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

The ship left Port Canaveral on Saturday for a seven-day voyage to the western Caribbean.

Witnesses reported on X that the man jumped from the ship, but officials have not confirmed the incident.
