Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty for Manchester United against Arsenal after the frantic third round of the FA Cup ended 1-1 in extra time at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal’s Kai Havertz was the only one of the first four penalty takers to miss, prevented by a brilliant stop from Altay Bayindir, before Zirkzee – who was booed in a defeat to Newcastle United last month – stepped up and won the shootout 5-0. 3.

After a disappointing first half, United took the lead in the 52nd minute through a curling effort from Bruno Fernandes from inside the box after a great run from Alejandro Garnacho.

However, the game turned around 10 minutes later when United’s Diogo Dalot – already suspended for a wild foul on Myles Lewis-Skelly – received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino.

Two minutes later, Bayindir’s poor shot attempt landed at the feet of Gabriel Magalhães, whose shot took a nasty deflection off Matthijs de Ligt and the hosts took the lead for the draw.

Arsenal could have completed the comeback when they were awarded a questionable penalty after Havertz went down with minimal contact from Harry Maguire. But Bayindir made an excellent save from Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard before Mikel Arteta’s side wasted several chances to score the winner.

United will face Leicester City and their former interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy in the fourth round.
