Manchester City slips further into crisis with the defeat against Juventus in the Champions League

Manchester City’s ongoing crisis shows no sign of abating after Pep Guardiola’s side were beaten 2-0 away to Juventus in the Champions League.

That means City have won just once in their last ten games, a run of seven defeats. According to Sky Sports, that is as many losses as City have suffered in the last 105 games under Guardiola.

Goals from Dušan Vlahović and Weston McKennie in the second half secured the three points for the team Vecchia Signora and put City in real danger of missing out on a place in the knockout rounds.

The Citizens’ sudden decline in form is as surprising as it is confusing. This has been one of the most dominant teams in the world in recent years, winning a record fourth consecutive Premier League title just last season.

Guardiola doesn’t seem to know how to stop this slide either – although it’s less a stumble than a fall off a cliff.

This is City’s worst form since 2006 and one that Guardiola has never experienced in his coaching career.

“We played well, really, really, well,” a visibly frustrated Guardiola told TNT Sports after the game. “We missed the last pass, the last action when we got there (near the goal). We only conceded a few (chances), of course there were some substitutions, but I’m so proud of the players.

“I know they are giving it their all, they tried and now we are living in these times but hopefully we can change the results. I know it’s difficult in the Champions League, but we played really well.

“If we manage to turn things around, we will not forget this time. We will appreciate even more what we have done in the past and what we will do in the future.”

City have, of course, suffered injuries to key players. The absence of Manuel Akanji, John Stones and Nathan Ake has decimated the defense, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri’s knee injury has left the team without arguably the best player in the world.

But the lack of composure and control and the nervousness that is now clearly rending this team is remarkable given the level of talent and experience Guardiola still has.

This is the worst run of Guardiola's managerial career.

Ederson, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan, Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish all started against Juve and played a crucial role in City’s success last season.

The side have a big week ahead as they host Manchester United for the Manchester Derby at the Etihad on Sunday before traveling to Aston Villa the following weekend.

In the Champions League, City’s final two games in the new 36-team group stage format are away at Paris Saint-Germain and at home at Club Brugge.

City are currently in 22nd place, with teams ranked 9th to 24th facing off in a home-and-away playoff to reach the round of 16. The top eight qualify automatically.

Barcelona claimed their fifth consecutive Champions League win with a thrilling 3-2 away win at Borussia Dortmund.

After a goalless first half, a wild second period began with Raphinha putting Barça ahead seven minutes after the restart before Serhou Guirassy equalized for Dortmund from the penalty spot on the hour mark after being clumsily fouled by Pau Cubarsí.

Substitute Ferrán Torres restored it Blaugrana He took the lead in the 75th minute as he was in the right place at the right time to convert the rebound after Fermín López’s shot was parried.

But the lead only lasted three minutes before Guirassy scored Dortmund’s equalizer again, rolling the ball into the empty net after a mix-up in the Barcelona defense.

However, the three points were not to be denied to the Spanish giants as Torres scored the winner five minutes from time, finishing a quick counterattack into the bottom corner.

The win leaves Barça in second place in the table, while Dortmund are in ninth place, one place outside the automatic qualification places.

Bukayo Saka scored twice and Arsenal secured a confident position for automatic qualification with a 3-0 home win over Monaco.

Saka scored a goal in each half before Kai Havertz scored the third two minutes from the final whistle to put the Gunners back on winning ways after Mikel Arteta’s side were held to a draw by Fulham on Sunday.

The win leaves Arsenal in third place, while Monaco are in 16th place.
