Maple Syrup Heist Dramedy is cheerful

Just over a decade ago, the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Robbery became the largest heist in the country’s history. Now Brian Donovan and Ed Herro have put their own “Fargo”-esque spin on real-life theft in Prime Video’s wonderfully unhinged dramedy-thriller “The Sticky.” Set in 2011 in a tiny Quebec town where syrup is king, the film introduces audiences to three unlikely and offbeat characters. There’s Ruth (a successful Margo Martindale), an embittered maple farmer determined to keep her farm afloat while caring for her comatose husband. Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), an associate of Ruth’s husband, is a Boston gangster who often strikes without thinking. And finally there’s Remy (Guillaume Cyr), a well-meaning Quebec Maple Association security guard who’s a bit ignorant. This unlikely crew joins forces for a crazy mission full of pranks and false starts. Breezy, fun and completely crazy, “The Sticky” is a wild and crazy ride that viewers will eagerly sip.

The six-part crime drama begins, like so many, with a corpse. However, this body happens to be in a vat of maple syrup. As the series flashes back 48 hours, the audience is introduced to Ruth, who has just learned that her farm has been closed and her syrup confiscated. At the Quebec Maple Association warehouse, Remy is upset after being shamed and humiliated after asking his boss Léo (Mickaël Gouin) for a promotion and extra security to help him guard the syrup supplies. Finally, Mike, a low-level criminal, visits various businesses in the city to collect “rent” on behalf of his superiors. At the center of this story is Leonard Gauthier (Guy Nadon), the head of the Maple Association (and Léo’s father). He cheats local farmers with restrictive rules, harassment and unfair takeovers.

Ruth urgently needs cash and turns to Mike, who puts her in touch with Remy. The trio decide to beat Leonard and the Quebec Maple Association at their own game by making off with $150 million of the ill-kept syrup. But when the fugitive gangster, the carer and the bumbling daddy’s son start making plans, things don’t quite go according to plan. With such a close-knit community, hardly anything goes unnoticed. Additionally, when a man is found dead and Montreal-based detective Valérie Nadeau (Suzanne Clément) is assigned to investigate, she and local police officer Teddy Green (Gita Miller) quickly begin putting the pieces together.

“The Sticky” is absolutely absurd in every way. The criminals constantly try to change and change their plans before their window closes to commit the theft. However, in almost every episode they are almost discovered. Episode 3, “Margins,” is particularly hilarious as the group gets locked in a storage room to avoid detection by the police. Although the entire series is breezy and entertaining, the penultimate chapter, Episode 5, “Blade,” is top notch. When the plans for the heist fail, Ruth, Remy and Mike begin attacking each other. (Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis makes a flawless and surprising cameo.)

While the series focuses on the theft of sweet juice, the main characters are three people desperately trying to free themselves from oppressive systems and circumstances. Unfortunately, they are not tolerable individuals. One of the most delicious aspects of “The Sticky” is that its main characters are so laughably terrible that viewers often can’t decide whether they want the heist to succeed. Minor characters (particularly those with shockingly terrible French-Canadian accents) also add to the depth of the show. Nadon’s Leonard, for example, is so comically greedy that he is often mocked and publicly insulted.

Produced by Blumhouse on television, the series is undoubtedly violent and even shocking, but it never stops being absolute fun. Furthermore, since the real-life crime is extensive and involves many more key characters, it is pleasing that the series ends with a shocking cliffhanger that hints at the possibility of another season. Nevertheless, “The Sticky” is already a delightful, exciting adventure full of jokes, bizarre situations and a sharp cast in this first season.

The six episodes of “The Sticky” premiere on Prime Video on December 6th.
