Mariah Carey Explains How Son Roc Taught Her to Play Fortnite (Exclusive)

It’s time to unfreeze the Queen of Christmas – on Fortnite.

After emerging from a block of ice that appeared on the island a few days ago, Mariah Carey will be bringing her festive spirit — and her holiday favorite “All I Want for Christmas Is You” — to Winterfest through January 7th.

“My Fortnite character is basically me with different outfits and skins,” the “We Belong Together” artist, 55, tells PEOPLE. “I’m so excited about it. It’s really sweet.”

Fans can celebrate the holidays with “really cute” new outfits in the shop, like Carey’s Santa Claus costume, which was inspired by the Merry Christmas Album cover and a glamorous gold number inspired by Emancipation of Mimi Album cover.

While Carey’s Fotnite alter ego is a non-player character, players can “party” with her.

“She runs and she spins. She does a little dance from the 2019 music video ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ and as a jam track for ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You,'” Carey explains.

According to the singing icon, her interest in Fortnite stems from her 13-year-old son Moroccan, aka “Roc,” whom she shares with ex-husband Nick Cannon.

“I watched my son play Fortnite for the longest time, and then he taught me to play,” Carey says. “It was a nice little excursion to figure out whether we were going to do it (Fortnite collaboration) or not.”

After wrapping up her Christmas Time Tour on Dec. 17 in Brooklyn, where she signed Rihanna’s chest, the “Heartbreaker” star also opens up to PEOPLE about the future of her holiday shows.

“I really love doing it, I just have to plan it a little differently because I got sick this year just from being out too long,” says Carey, who had to cancel three shows after contracting the illness I fell ill with the flu.

Of course, Carey added that she’ll probably “always” do her Christmas shows.

The Grammy winner also revealed that she’s not “sick of Christmas” at all – and that she’d like to cover “another slow, sad song” for the holidays.

“I’m in Aspen and ‘Oh, Santa’ is playing over the speakers. And I’m like, ‘I guess I’m not sick of it,'” Carey laughs.
