Mariah Carey opens Netflix’s NFL doubleheader with holiday cheer

The Queen of Christmas brought holiday cheer to Netflix’s NFL doubleheader on Wednesday.

Mariah Carey opened the streaming giant’s Christmas Playday broadcasts with a taped performance of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

The artist, who wore a dazzling red holiday costume, is seen on a roof adorned with Christmas decorations including fake snow and Christmas trees. As she sings, some VIPs from the North Pole (including Santa Claus and some elves) dance around her. The segment included a montage of clips from past games and groups of people watching Netflix from home.

The streaming giant also shared the appearance in a post on X, writing, “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A MARIAH CAREY KICKOFF.”

Carey wrote the song in 1994 when she was 22 years old. The album was certified triple platinum the year it was released and sold more than three million copies in the United States. Since then, at least six million more copies or album equivalents have been sold. The Christmas classic remains extremely popular, particularly at this time of year, although listenership has declined.

Netflix’s first NFL broadcast, produced by CBS Sports, shows meetings between the Kansas City Chiefs at the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens at the Houston Texans.

Beyoncé is also scheduled to perform at halftime in the second game of the day.

The games are an important test for Netflix as the company increases its focus on live event programming. The streaming giant has already announced several more high-profile live events for the future, including weekly World Wrestling Entertainment “Raw” shows streaming in less than two weeks, as well as the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In the run-up to the Christmas Games, Netflix heavily promoted Carey and Beyoncé’s performances.

“The NFL is live on Netflix and I will be there too,” Carey said in a teaser video posted before the game.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé appeared to poke fun at the streaming issues Netflix has had with previous live events in a teaser video posted on X on Tuesday. The X account for Netflix then temporarily changed its profile bio to read: “roasted by Beyoncé 12.24.24”
