Maritime storm warnings were issued for parts of New York and Pennsylvania through Saturday

More winter weather is expected for the Great Lakes region through the weekend.

“Cold air, relatively warmer lake water temperatures and a persistent northwesterly flow will result in foot-deep snow accumulations in some regions,” the National Weather Service said in its latest update Friday.

Meteorologists warned of potentially dangerous travel conditions in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania as strong winds and blowing snow would reduce visibility.

Western New York shores along Lake Ontario could see up to two feet of lake effect snow accumulations through Sunday.

Notes and warnings

Portions of the Great Lakes and Northeast regions are under a winter storm watch and warning for the next few days, NWS meteorologists said.

Winter storm warnings were issued for parts of New York and Vermont through Saturday.

Winter weather warnings have been issued for parts of New York through Saturday and Sunday.

Lake effect snow warnings are also in effect for parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York through Friday and Saturday.

Lake effect snow occurs when wind-driven cold air flows over warmer lakes. In the case of this winter storm, the Great Lakes experienced record warmth.

Freezing temperatures

Bitterly cold temperatures will continue in the eastern United States through the weekend.

“Across much of the southeastern United States, low temperatures in the low 20s will be possible Saturday morning and generally lower 30s Sunday morning,” forecasters said.

A frost warning is in effect for parts of northern Florida through Saturday.

By Sunday, the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast should see higher temperatures in the 50s and 40s.
