Marjorie Taylor Greene says the government is “in control” of drones in New Jersey

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has accused the government of withholding information about mysterious drones spotted over New Jersey and New York.

Although the FBI has received thousands of reports from the public since the sightings began in November, an FBI spokesman told Congress on Tuesday “we don’t know” who is behind them, although several drones have been spotted near sensitive military sites .

On Saturday, a New York airport was closed for an hour after drone activity blocked its airspace.

In a Saturday post on X, Greene said she doesn’t believe the government’s official communications.

“The government is in control of the drones and is refusing to tell the American people what is going on. It really is that bad,” she wrote.

In a Friday interview with the Daily MailGreene said the government is withholding information about the drones.

“I call it complete nonsense that no one knows what that is. And I think it’s a slap in the face to the American people to say they don’t know what that is,” Greene said.

She continued: “They can track down a man who just killed a CEO, but they can’t identify what these drones are and where are they coming from?”

“I find it absolutely disgusting to lie to the American people in this way and the truth must be told about it.”

Newsweek asked the FBI for comment via email and Greene’s office by phone.

While federal authorities, including the Pentagon, say they do not know the origins of the drones, the FBI said many of the sightings were likely misidentified manned aircraft.

About 5,000 reports were received through a nationwide tip line set up in response to widespread requests for answers from civilians and local authorities, an FBI official told reporters in Saturday’s news conference. However, of those leads, the official said that “less than 100 leads were generated and were deemed worthy of further investigative activities.”

Newsweek previously spoke with drone expert Vijay Kumar, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

He was skeptical of rumors that the drones were sent by a foreign state actor, saying the evidence suggested it was a U.S. government operation.

Kumar said that even though the FBI doesn’t know who is behind the drones, that doesn’t mean the U.S. government as a whole isn’t involved, especially given that the drones have been spotted near airports and military bases, which are equipped with sophisticated radar.

“There are a lot of firewalls between agencies, so the fact that the FBI says they don’t know what’s happening is also very likely, but as someone who has lived in this country for 40 years, I really find it hard to believe that this…” The US government doesn’t know exactly what’s going on.
