The duo disagreed over how Indian star Rishabh Pant got out in the first innings when he was caught in the deep after missing a shot on the ramp.

Rant was 5-191 for India at 28 in response to Australia’s 474 when he played the shot to Scott Boland despite the fielders having good leg and a deep third man.

“This is unacceptable,” Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

“I know he is a very aggressive player and a player who is a bit out of line and unpredictable, but you have to recognize the game situation and the pitch.

“Two players were back for that exact shot, so the percentages are not in your favor. If you don’t get six hits, you’ll be trapped somewhere deep.

“The shot is just too hard and too risky to play with any level of confidence and I would put it on the line and say you don’t have to do that.”

“If you want to attack, run at the pitcher and hit him over the middle, I much prefer that shot to that one.”

But Hussey disagreed and said, “You have to compare the good with the bad” when it comes to players like Pant.

“It’s a tough question though, isn’t it, because that’s how he likes to play, he likes to play these crazy shots and if you start giving him too many doubts it can only confuse him more,” he said.

“It’s a bad shot, don’t get me wrong.”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan sided with Hussey and asked Waugh a question: “Rishabh Pant is an exceptional talent, he plays in a way that not many play. Wouldn’t you give him license to continue playing like this?” ?”

“No, because that’s not an excuse,” Waugh said.

“That’s a terrible shot when his team needed it to go an inning. I understand that he is an aggressive player and I want him to be aggressive, but you still have to have certain limits on the shots you play. There has to be a certain amount of restraint and percentages in your favor for that shot to fail.”

Hussey argued that if Pant had hit a six, Waugh could have praised him on commentary.

“It’s a difficult situation because it’s not a great shot and it’s not a great look, especially for an Indian team that wants to fight hard,” Hussey said.

“But you shouldn’t doubt him, he is at his best when he is clear and free and plays in his natural way. I would be disappointed with the shot, I’m sure he would be disappointed with the shot, but I don’t want him to change the way he plays.”

Hussey has worked as an assistant coach in England’s T20 and in the Indian Premier League and this time it was Waugh who asked a question.

“So you’re saying that’s OK as a coach?” asked Waugh.

“Yeah, I’d say go for it, buddy, do what you want to do,” Hussey replied.

“That’s why you’re not head coach, just assistant coach,” Waugh shot back as Hussey and Vaughan laughed.
