Martin Short celebrates his induction into “SNL’s” Five Times Club with confessions from Tom Hanks, Tina Fey and more

Martin Short is the newest celebrity to emerge Saturday Night Live History and joined an elite group of hosting artists SNL at least five times – so it’s only fair that the other stars come out to celebrate his big moment.

For the occasion, Short donned the infamous robe, drank a martini named after him, and exchanged truth bombs with several Hollywood stars. The December 21 cold open began with a brief monologue from Tom Hanks, who explained that he founded the club in 1990 as a “brilliantly lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.”

Hanks was interrupted by Paul Rudd, who looked around and asked Here star he spoke to. “I’ve done so many documentaries that every time I sit in a leather chair, I just naturally assume that I’m sitting in one,” Hanks replied.

They then welcomed Short to the room and celebrated his introduction with a cocktail called the “Marty-tini.”

As Rudd put it: “It’s just like you: super sweet and after a few sips you think, ‘I understand’.”

Other members arrived to welcome Short to their exclusive club, including Alec Baldwin, who wore a special gown to commemorate his 17 performances SNL Host; Scarlett Johansson, who took special care to slam the door on her husband, SNL Actor Colin Jost; and Kristen Wiig, casually brushing her teeth while announcing that she definitely doesn’t live in the clubhouse.

At some point when he was referring to his own show Just murders in the buildingShort got a bit meta and commented, “Isn’t it embarrassing when shows throw in big name cameos just to boost cheap ratings?”

“It’s the worst. It’s the worst thing ever,” replied two voices from the door, who were two other well-known stars: Melissa McCarthy and Emma Stone.

In another interaction, Short was informed that this was the time and space for complete openness.

“I hope you don’t expect a repeat of what happened last year when we saw each other,” Wiig told Short. “I’m not that girl anymore.”

“And I’m not that flexible anymore,” he replied. When Wiig told the group that she and Short had once taken an intimate hot yoga class, Short said curtly, “Don’t tell them that.”

“It’s okay,” Wiig assured him. “In this club you can be completely honest.”

This began a chain of increasingly ridiculous false confessions from club members.

“Ant-Man’s powers are not good,” Rudd admitted.

Fey chimed in and confessed, “I’m the one flying these drones. All!”

Hanks then revealed, “I’ve never had COVID” – to which Johansson replied, “I have COVID, right now!”

Baldwin smoked a cigarette in the corner and complained, “I have too many children.”

Later, after McCarthy crashed through a wall, John Mulaney arrived to reunite with Short, who was starring in his short-lived Fox sitcom Mulaney back in 2014.

“You could never do this show now,” Mulaney noted.

“Why, because everyone is so awake?” A short question.

“No,” Mulaney said. “Because it wasn’t good and nobody liked it.”

Eventually, Jimmy Fallon joined the club to give Short his robe. “Exactly your size,” he announced. “A women’s small.”
