• Comedy (and Christmas?) legend Martin Short becomes a five-timer tonight and will return to Studio 8H tonight. He will be the sixth performer ever to join the club. Short was already a legend when he joined the cast of SNL for its tenth season in 1984, having served as a cast member and writer SCTV from 1981-1984.

• Short quickly returned to SNL as host, stopping by to co-host for the first time in 1986 Three amigos With Steve Martin and Chevy Chase. He hosted again in 1996 and 2012 before co-hosting with Steve Martin again in 2022. Fun fact is that Short has only hosted SNL in December, and his last three times as host were specifically “the Christmas episode”!

• This is Hozier’s second appearance as a musical guest on the show. He first appeared on the series exactly ten years ago, in 2014, as the musical guest for Bill Hader’s season 40 episode.

• The series has not yet announced who will start its episodes in 2025, but it is expected to take an extended break to do so prepare for it SNL50 Anniversary broadcast, which will be broadcast live on Sunday, February 16th.

• Several special documentaries will air on NBC and Peacock before the big party. Questlove and SNL alum Oz Rodriguez have teamed up to produce: Ladies and gentlemen… 50 years of SNL music. It is said to contain never-before-told stories about the show’s musical performances over the past fifty years and features interviews with artists such as Bad Bunny, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, Justin Timberlake and Jack White. The special is scheduled to premiere on January 27th.

• There is also a four-part documentary titled SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Nightwhich will stream from January 16th. The first episode, “Five Minutes,” focuses on the SNL audition process and will reportedly feature footage from the audition room. Episode 2, “Written by: A Week Inside the SNL Writers Room,” is about…writing a 90-minute show in a week. Episode 3 is set to focus entirely on the “More Cowbell” sketch, while Episode 4, “Season 11: The Strange Year,” will focus on the one year that Lorne Michaels usually wants everyone to forget. This season (which ran from 1985 to 1986) saw Michaels return to the show after a five-year hiatus, and Michaels subsequently made the decision to hire stars such as Anthony Michael Hall, Robert Downey Jr., Randy Quaid and Joan Cusack instead of more traditional comedians .
