Warning: Contains spoilers for Phoenix #6As Jean Grey’s new role as the cosmic protector Phoenix continues to evolvethe legendary X-Men hero, has put together an epic new version of it Guardians of the Galaxy to fight against Thanos and the Dark God Perrikus. Revealed in Phoenix #6, the new Guardians, consist of Jean Grey, long-time Guardians warrior Rocket Raccoon, intergalactic protector Nova, Asgardian Sif and Captain Marvel, leader of the Avengers.

Although Jean Gray hasn’t officially named her powerful new team the Guardians of the Galaxy, that’s exactly what they are in every sense of the word, as they embark on a new mission to defeat Thanos and take control of his monstrous hands to wrest the Galactic Council away.

Jean Grey’s journey to regain her status as a Phoenix with complete control and power over the Phoenix Forces has taken the mutant heroine into space, where she has attempted to finally establish the Phoenix as a force… even if many don’t don’t see it that way. The Phoenix Force has wreaked havoc across the cosmos for millennia, causing tThe ruling Galactic Council fears the freedom and power Jean Gray now has in spaceespecially after her corruption as the Dark Phoenix. The Shi’ar warrior Gladiator used Jean’s victorious battle against Gorr, the God Slayer to convince the Council to give Perrikus a free hand to defeat Phoenix, while also appointing the brutal Thanos as leader of the Galactic Council.

Almost immediately, Thanos began enslaving planets across the galaxy using his many armies, the Black Order, the Eye of the Warlock, and the support of Perrikus, making Jean’s mission even more important. While Jean has now been elevated to an abstract being, on the same level as other cosmic beings like Eternity and The In-Betweener, that doesn’t mean she could defeat Thanos in a duel, as he himself has fought against these abstractions. Luckily, Jean now has her guardians who can defend themselves against Thanos and his rule. Nova, whose mission is to protect space, was the first new addition to the Phoenix Guardians, but Sid, Rocket and Carol Jean soon joined. Carol has saved the galaxy many times as Captain Marvel and is friends with Jean, Rocket loves a dangerous mission to save his universe and Sif is out for revenge against Perrikus, who once attacked and almost destroyed Asgard years ago.
