Mary Trump issues ‘doomed’ warning after Donald Trump scores major legal victory

Mary Trump, Donald Trump’s estranged niece, warned Saturday that “we are doomed” after the president-elect’s defamation lawsuit against ABC News was settled.

ABC News agreed Saturday to pay $15 million for Trump’s presidential library and issue a public apology to settle a defamation lawsuit over inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos during a broadcast earlier this year.

Trump filed the defamation lawsuit after Stephanopoulos alleged it in a March 10 ABC News story. This week During an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, he explained that Trump had been “rape-liable” in connection with writer E. Jean Carroll and her lawsuits against him. In May 2023, a civil jury in New York found Trump guilty of sexually assaulting Carroll and then defaming her character, denying that the attack occurred but not that he raped her.

Last year, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million, and in January she was ordered to pay her $83.3 million to settle additional defamation suits. The president-elect is appealing both rulings.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s settlement terms require ABC News to post a note on its website expressing regret over the lawsuit. Additionally, the network will pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump’s lawyers.

“We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court docket,” ABC News said in a statement.

Reacting to the agreement, Mary Trump, a vocal critic of her uncle, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday evening: “How many coloring books can $15 million buy? Besides, we are doomed.”

Newsweek asked Trump’s transition team and Mary Trump via email Sunday morning for comment.

Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over both Carroll cases, clarified in July 2023 that the jury’s conclusion reflected specific legal definitions.

“The definition of rape in New York criminal law is far narrower than the meaning of ‘rape’ in common modern usage, its definition in some dictionaries, in some federal and state criminal statutes, and elsewhere,” he wrote.

The judge also noted that the jury’s conclusion meant that Carroll had failed to prove rape “in the narrow, technical sense of a particular section of New York penal law.” However, Kaplan emphasized that this does not mean that Carroll “could not prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her, as many people have a general understanding of the word ‘rape’.”

While it’s not clear what Mary Trump specifically meant by her “doomed” warning, it’s not the first time she’s warned people about her uncle.

In November, shortly after Trump was elected to a second term in a decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Mary Trump warned of impending “dangers.”

In a YouTube video titled “Understanding Trump’s Shocking Victory – Mary Trump’s Path Forward,” Mary Trump said: “This is a blow. I can’t sugarcoat it. This was a tragic blow to the American experiment. We also need to remember that we have allies around the world who are on our side and will be there for us when we need them, and we will.”

“There are many people out there who understand what we are going through, who understand the dangers we face and understand the struggle that lies ahead,” she added as she shared several TikTok videos from other women Governments around the world showed they posted support for American women.
