Maryland dominates Ohio State in the Buckeyes’ Big Ten opener, 83-59

It took the Terrapins less than 10 minutes to tear the Buckeyes apart on Wednesday.

Ohio State’s offense looked anemic and plagued by turnovers, and its defense was unable to keep up with Maryland as the Terrapins (8-1, 1-0) went on a dominant 34-7 run in the first half Earn an 83:59 win The Buckeyes (5-3, 0-1) open Big Ten play for both schools.

Guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the offense for Maryland, collecting 23 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Forward Derik Queen followed with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Devin Royal paced Ohio State with 18 points in the loss. John Mobley Jr. took 15.

First half

The way the Terrapins started from behind the 3-point line was neither slow nor steady.

Maryland opened the game 3 of 3 from distance, including two shots from NBA distance for Gillespie. His second shot from distance catalyzed a 16-2 run, which Tafara Gapare put an exclamation point on with a tomahawk slam and another triple. Maryland led 25-8 less than 10 minutes into the game and the Buckeyes never came back into contention for victory.

The Terrapins went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-point lead at 31-10 before the U8 media timeout ended. At this point they already had an 11-0 lead in turnovers. Ohio State finished the first half with 12 turnovers to Maryland’s two.

When the lead was cut to 31-12, the Terrapins went on another 9-0 run, extending their lead to 28. That made it an extended 26-4 win for Maryland over a period of about 10 minutes.

Maryland went on another 8-1 stint, extending the record to 34-7 and securing its largest lead of the first half at 48-15, maintaining the lead at 50-17 heading into the locker room.

Maryland was in cruise control for most of the second half. Forwards Julian Reese and Gillespie combined for five points to start the quarter, making it 55-17 for the Terrapins.

A 3-pointer from guard Selton Miguel broke the 40-point threshold for Maryland’s lead at 63-23. Ohio State started to give in a bit to get a more respectable final score and gain some momentum heading into the next game by getting its first two three-pointers of the contest from Mobley and Meechie Johnson Jr.

Johnson hit a layup with 10:22 left to extend the lead back to 30 at 68-38. Bruce Thornton and Mobley combined for a quick five-pointer to bring the game to 73-47.

Another Mobley three-pointer made it a 78-56 ballgame, but it was about 10 miles short and 10 hours late for Maryland to pull out a 24-point victory.

What’s next?

Ohio State returns to Value City Arena for its second Big Ten game of the season against Rutgers before returning to non-conference play. Tipoff is at noon on Saturday on FS1.

Game notes

  • Center Aaron Bradshaw remains out for Ohio State while a domestic dispute is investigated. Senior guard Ques Glover and freshman forward Colin White are also out due to injuries.

  • The Buckeyes had twice as many turnovers (12) as field goals (6) in the first half.

  • It took more than 23 minutes of game time for Ohio State to score four straight points against Maryland.

  • Ohio State started 0 of 10 from 3-point range before Mobley hit the team’s first triple 13:39 into the game.

  • Maryland’s 33-point halftime lead was its largest in a Big Ten game since the 1996-97 season.
