MassDOT: Snowfall will impact travel conditions statewide Friday

Motorists should be aware that snowfall is impacting travel in “many regions of the state,” the Massachusetts Department of Transportation warned late Friday afternoon.

Light to moderate snowfall is expected to continue into the evening and impact Friday’s commute. MassDOT urged drivers to allow for additional travel time and to check weather forecasts for their routes and destinations.

The National Weather Service expects up to 5 inches of snow to fall in parts of the state. Eastern Massachusetts is expected to see the most snowfall due to a coastal storm offshore, flooding the area with 1 to 3 inches of snow.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall is expected to ease overnight.

Accidents were reported starting late Friday afternoon. After a multi-vehicle accident involving two semi-trucks, first responders closed the east side of the Massachusetts Turnpike just past Exit 90 in Auburn around 1:30 p.m.

In a news release sent Friday afternoon, MassDOT said the agency has more than 3,000 pieces of snow and ice control equipment statewide, with approximately 320,000 tons of salt, 850,000 gallons of magnesium chloride and 310,000 gallons of mixed brine deployed as needed.
