Massive storm brings snow, ice and cold

ARLINGTON, Va. − More than 60 million Americans were under winter weather and storm warnings on Sunday as a swath of the Midwest and East already hit by bitterly cold temperatures braced for a historic storm after more than 2 feet in some areas since Friday Snow had fallen.

As of Sunday morning, Erie, Pennsylvania was covered in over 17 inches of snow. As AccuWeather reported, Rome, New York, was inundated by nearly two feet of snow. Parts of Upstate New York have received more than 30 inches of snow in recent days.

Governors in Kentucky and Virginia declared states of emergency ahead of the weather system. The National Weather Service warned that some areas could experience the biggest storm in more than a decade. Many school systems that planned to reopen Monday after a two-week winter holiday break faced a delay of a day or longer.

“The storm is still taking shape,” said meteorologist Rich Bann with the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center. “But this thing poses several dangers, from heavy snow on the plains to significant icing on roads further south.”

In Arlington and the Washington, D.C., region, where some winters come and go with barely a hint of snow, the storm was forecast for Sunday night. The weather service warned of total snow and sleet accumulations of 5 to 9 inches. Meteorologists said amounts of 10 to 12 inches were possible in isolated spots if there was heavy banding in the area.
