Massive Weather: Coastal storm offshore brings up to 3 inches of snow

With Christmas just around the corner, Massachusetts residents could be rewarded with fresh snowfall.

According to the National Weather Service, Friday is expected to see intermittent light rain and snow throughout the day before a full snowfall in the afternoon.

Eastern Massachusetts is expected to see the most snowfall due to a coastal storm offshore, flooding the area with 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 cm) of snow, forecasters said. Further inland, forecasters have not ruled out 10cm of snow falling.

A forecast map released by the weather service shows the chance is mostly less than 1 inch inland. This applies to Springfield, Greenfield and Great Barrington, while Worcester could see 1 inch.

Closer to the coast, Lawrence, Boston, Plymouth and Hyannis could all see between 1 and 2 inches of snow, the map shows. While Nantucket may not see as much snow, Provincetown could see as much as 2 inches.

“A challenge to the forecast is whether we can convert the rain to snow for Cape Cod and neighboring islands due to higher precipitation amounts earlier in the afternoon, which may help cool the ambient air and lower temperatures and leave snow too,” forecasters said.

Highs across the state are widely expected to be in the low to mid 30s, with lows likely falling into the 20s on Friday, forecasters added.

Snowfall is expected to fall scattered Friday night into Saturday but will dry out as temperatures are unlikely to rise above freezing, forecasters continued. Lowest highs could be in the high 20s before overnight lows reach the low to mid teens.

The coldest air of the season is expected to last from Saturday night into Monday, forecasters said. The snow has disappeared and been replaced by dry weather, although there was a chance of snow flurries on the Outer Cape. But because of the wind chill, Sunday’s temperatures, which were expected to reach the teens and lows of 20 degrees, could feel like 5 degrees outside.

A clipper system is expected to bring another round of light snow or rain along the coast on Christmas Eve, forecasters said. There is a small chance of snow accumulation reaching 1 inch starting Friday, but timing is uncertain. It could start on Tuesday or overnight on Monday.

Dry weather should then return on Christmas Day and continue into Thursday, with temperatures easing and possibly reaching highs in the 40s. Temperatures could reach near 40 degrees in Worcester and Springfield, while Boston is expected to see temperatures of 40 degrees on Christmas Day and one degree higher on Thursday, AccuWeather said.
