Matt Reeves talks about the plot of The Batman 2 and staying outside the DCU

Since the Superman trailer aired, there has been a lot of talk about whether or not David Corenswet’s Clark might be paired with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, despite previous indications that this wasn’t the case.

Well, it still doesn’t happen. When asked about the recently announced Clayface movie, which will somehow be the third DCU film, James Gunn had this to say to Gizmodo:

“Well, I mean, Clayface is in the DCU, so it doesn’t matter.”

Despite some rumors, the official line is still that The Batman and now The Penguin will remain an Elseworld project outside of the DCU. Although Gunn has said that it had been considered before, he said that it was ultimately Matt Reeves’ decision and he wanted the freedom to further explore his own universe, free from the possible constraints of the larger DCU . So that’s what’s happening, and now Reeves is free to share what’s going on in The Batman 2, where the script is reportedly still being worked on. Here he speaks to Digital Spy, even if he doesn’t know any details:

“As we start the next film, there’s a lot more gray,” Reeves continued. “There are many more people who are divided. There is much more division in the city. It’s a lot more like our world today, there’s a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps and not communicating.”

“How does Batman fit in?” Where do you fit in? It’s not as clear as saying, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy, I hunt bad guys’.”

“And when things are gray, it’s very hard to be Batman, so that’s part of the challenge as we face it.”

“Batman 2” is set to begin just as “The Penguin” ends and winter reaches Gotham. We know virtually nothing about the villains and characters that might appear in the film, although of course the film ended with Barry Keoghan being revealed as the universe’s Joker. Gunn has dismissed the idea of a Penguin-style Joker series coming to HBO, but he hasn’t been ruled out for the film, and Keoghan remains tight-lipped about it.

The Batman universe seems to want to avoid anything supernatural or too alien, which excludes Clayface for example, but so far it has managed to adapt The Riddler (as a Zodiac killer), The Penguin (a pure gangster) and… we’ll see what It’s about Joker, but at least it’s about an imprisoned psychopath. The winter theme makes some think of Mr. Freeze, but if so, that would probably have to be a modified Reeves version and not a guy running around in a bubble helmet. Black Mask has been thrown around as a villain who would fit well into this universe, but that’s all just guesswork for now.
