Mavericks’ Luka Doncic will undergo an MRI after suffering an injury on Christmas Day

The Dallas Mavericks could be without star Luka Doncic for a long time. According to multiple reports, Doncic left the American Airlines Center in Dallas on crutches after suffering a left calf strain during the Mavericks’ 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas Day.

Doncic will undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity of the injury.

“I pray for Luka that he recovers quickly,” Kyrie Irving said in his postgame press conference. “You know, whatever the schedule is, we have to adapt. It’s just the nature of the business.

“But hopefully he’ll just take his time and come back when he’s ready. It’s just a crazy game, you know, on a holiday like this man. But yeah, we just have to be ready for it and everyone has to be ready to adapt to the lineups.

“You know, even though we’re six and two, I don’t really care about that number. I prefer to go into battle with a healthy team, in which everyone is well and in which everyone is doing well.

“But again, it’s the nature of the business. (We) just have to adapt and be ready.”

The seemingly non-contact injury occurred when Doncic was probing the Wolves defense while Jaden McDaniels was guarding him. Doncic paused at the elbow and grimaced before passing the ball to Irving. He limped around the pitch and failed to return on the team’s next defensive possession before being substituted and heading to the locker room.

Doncic played just over 16 minutes on Wednesday before leaving the game with 2:31 remaining in the second quarter. He had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Doncic entered the contest with a bruised left heel.

The Mavericks are 6-2 when Doncic doesn’t play. Dallas is on the road for the next four games. It plays against the Phoenix Suns on Friday, followed by contests against the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets on New Year’s Day.
