Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić was forced out of Wednesday’s 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves due to a left calf injury.

Dončić was making a move at his elbow in the second quarter of the Christmas Day game at American Airlines Center when he suddenly pulled up and kicked the ball away. He then immediately started limping and seemed distraught when the play went the other way.

Dončić eventually left the field under his own power and entered the locker room, but he limped significantly.

The Mavericks ruled Dončić out at halftime with a left calf injury. Further details are not yet known, although he has been struggling with a calf strain that he first suffered in pre-season. Dončić recovered from this injury in time and started the regular season.

Dončić finished the game with 14 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes. He shot 5 of 9 from the field and 3 of 5 from distance. The 25-year-old started this season with averages of almost 29 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game.

The Timberwolves jumped ahead in the second quarter and took a 17-point lead at the break. They also held Dallas to just 16 points in that period and extended their lead to 26 points in the third quarter. However, Dallas opened the final period with a 31-11 score and made it a one-possession game in the final minute. However, this initiative came too late. Thanks to two big throws from Anthony Edwards, Minnesota was able to keep the game on track and secure the six-point victory.

Edwards led the Timberwolves with 26 points and eight rebounds in the win, which moved them to 15-14 on the season. Julius Randle came close to a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, and Rudy Gobert had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Kyrie Irving led Dallas in Dončić’s absence. He dropped 39 points and made 14 of 27 shots in the loss. Klay Thompson added 12 points on four 3-pointers. The Mavericks next face the Phoenix Suns on Friday as they begin a four-game road trip.
