Max Fried contract with the Yankees for eight years, $218 million

DALLAS – The New York Yankees wasted no time shaking off the disappointment of Juan Soto’s departure, going shopping again and agreeing to an eight-year, $218 million contract with left-handed starter Max Fried, a person with direct knowledge said of the USA TODAY Sports contract.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal will not become official until Fried passes his medical exam.

The deal, which includes no deferrals or opt-outs, is the richest contract ever awarded to a left-handed pitcher and the fourth-largest of any pitcher in history.

The Yankees, left at the altar Sunday when Soto rejected her 16-year, $760 million contract and instead took $5 million more and a year less from the Mets, acted as if they were even not so heartbroken.

They knew they had a lot of holes to fill, and if they had signed Soto, they wouldn’t have had financial flexibility to meet their other needs.

Now they have one of the best left-handed hitters in baseball in addition to star player Gerrit Cole and still have plenty of money left to find a third baseman, a center fielder, a first baseman and a reliever.

The Yankees have expressed interest in potentially trading for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger and free agent first baseman Christian Walker and reliever Tanner Scott, according to an official.

And they’ll still have a lot of money left over that Soto didn’t use.

“Look, it’s not going to stop us from hopefully putting together another great team,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday morning. “There are different ways to do it. We don’t even know which way that is this winter. You.” I don’t know what’s going to happen next, what free agents are going to come into play, who you’re going to team up with, who you might work with in a trade. That’s the beauty of it now, making good assessments and good decisions to put ourselves in a good position for the future.
