“Maybe I should teach them to dive” – John Tortorella is tired of the NHL becoming the NBA

“Maybe I should teach them to dive” – John Tortorella is tired of the NHL becoming the NBA

First of all, you know we’re in for a blast every time Torts walks into a room full of reporters and says “Let me start”. The man has two gears when it comes to speaking to the media. Either he will give you a series of one-word answers for 13 seconds and then storm off, or he will burn the earth. There’s really no in-between, so that was a treat.

Yesterday’s game in Boston was complete chaos after the first period. The Flyers took a 3-1 lead and then the wheels completely fell off. 3 penalties in the third period as the Bruins continued to gain momentum while the Flyers became the most undisciplined team in hockey history. They blow the 2-goal lead and Boston wins the game in overtime. That’s now two games in a row in which the Flyers have blown a lead in the third period and have had a total of eight penalties in the third period of those two games.

Obviously, it sounds like Torts has an issue with the last two calls against the Flyers. And I’ll definitely give him the one about Hathaway. I don’t necessarily know if I would consider that a dive at Lohrei because it’s just a terrible call. I don’t think Mason Lohrei was trying to sell his reputation, I just think he sucks at skating and has lost his edge. When you consider that the referees waited about five seconds to listen to the reaction of the TD Garden crowd before calling the penalty, it only becomes clearer how terrible this was. Couturier’s Pastrnak journey was 100% a journey, so it is what it is.

But I’m sure most of Torts’ frustration here comes from Charlie McAvoy, a street trash from Long Island, who chased Matvei Michkov early in the game because that idiot thought it was a fall.

Here’s just the classic FLID behavior from McAvoy. You hit a guy in the shin with both hands and then you kind of get mad at him because he goes down. I’m not entirely sure if you know how legs work, but it makes it difficult for someone to stay upright when their legs are cut out from underneath them. I’d like to see someone here take a two-handed punch to the shin from Charlie McAvoy and still try to say Michkov sold that punch. McAvoy forgot to turn on his brain yesterday, his wires were all messed up, he ends up freaking out and spends the rest of the day trying to get back at Michkov.

It’s just crazy because of any team in the NHL, you’d think the Bruins would know the most about how diving works.

Ultimately, I really don’t know how many jumps there actually were in yesterday’s game. Probably not many. But there were enough weak calls and missed calls that John Tortorella had to say something without explicitly saying that the refs were a complete joke. Brutal defeat for the Flyers, but at least we’re quoting another blast from Torts’ odds machine and a 2-goal game from Michkov. I’m willing to consider this a wash.

Side note: I’m sure a lot of people will still be upset about Torts’ decision to sit out TK for extra time after he came back cleared of concussion protocol. There have been plenty of moments so far this season where Torts has allowed Konecny to make some stupid decisions because he brings so much to the table offensively. But it’s hard not to send a message to the guys after Konecny took a stupid penalty late in the third period of the next game, after you’ve just upset the team for taking terrible situational penalties late in games. If that hadn’t happened right after the Panthers’ loss, Konecny might still be in overtime even after the major interference penalty. But less than 36 hours after he had already told the team to stop being a bunch of idiots.
