Officials are assessing the damage after Cyclone Chido devastated the island of Mayotte over the weekend.

As Reuters reported, it was the worst storm to hit the Indian Ocean islands in about 100 years. Chido’s winds of 124 miles per hour destroyed infrastructure and knocked out power and drinking water sources. Mayotte is a French territory off the east coast of Africa with a population of about 320,000.

According to multiple reports, France’s top official in Mayotte, François-Xavier Bieuville, estimated there could be hundreds or even thousands of deaths while speaking to a local media outlet.
