MBB Preview: Arkansas vs. Michigan at Jimmy V Classic

WHO: Arkansas Razorbacks (7-2, 0-0 SEC) vs. #14/14 Michigan Wolverines (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten)
What: This is the first time Arkansas will appear at the Jimmy V Classic and the first time since 1997 that the program will be held at Madison Square Garden.
When: Tuesday – Dec. 10 – approximately 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. (CT) / 9:00 p.m. (CT) or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1 (Tennessee vs. Miami).

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas travels to New York City to play in the most famous arena in the world – Madison Square Garden – and participate in the annual Jimmy V Classic. The Razorbacks face #14 Michigan on Tuesday (December 10). Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 8:00 p.m. CT/9:00 p.m. ET – or 30 minutes after the end of Game 1 of the Classic (Tennessee and Miami). Both games will be televised on ESPN.

Following the game against Michigan, Arkansas will make its annual trip to Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock to host UCA on Saturday (Dec. 14). Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast on SEDC Network Plus.

NOTES:

  • Arkansas and Michigan have met seven times, with the Wolverines holding a slight 4-3 advantage in the series. Both teams are 2-0 in the series at home. Michigan is 2-1 in neutral games against the Razorbacks.
  • One of the seven meetings took place in the semifinals of the 1997 NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden. Michigan advanced to the finals with a 77-62 win. Maurice Taylor led UM with 19 points as he was one of four Wolverines in double figures. New York native Kareem Reid led Arkansas with 19 points. Statistically, Arkansas won two key categories. It outscored UM 43-38 and had just 13 turnovers compared to 25 for UM. However, Michigan shot 45.8% and Arkansas only shot 23.9%.
  • The last time Arkansas and Michigan played, the Wolverines won 80-67 on December 8, 2012 in Ann Arbor. Glenn Robinson III led UM with 17 points and Trey Burke added 16 as each of the starting five scored in double figures. Marshawn Powell led Arkansas with 18 points.
  • For the first time since its inception (1995-96), Arkansas will play in the Jimmy V Classic.
  • A Calipari-coached team has competed in the Jimmy V Classic three times (once at UMass and twice at Memphis). His teams are 2-1 in the Classic.
  • Arkansas has been to the fourth and current version of the world’s most famous arena – Madison Square Garden – twice and played in the third version six times from 1943 to 1948. The Hogs are 3-7 all-time at MSG.
  • However, Coach Calipari has made 27 appearances at Madison Square Garden to date and is 15-12 overall at the venue.
