McLaren wins the F1 constructors’ championship for the first time in 26 years

McLaren’s 26-year wait for the Formula 1 constructors’ title is officially over.

Team drivers Lando Norris, 25, and Oscar Piastri, 23, presented the Papaya family with the trophy on Sunday after maintaining the team’s lead over Ferrari at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the 2024 season.

After taking pole position in qualifying on Saturday, Norris ultimately won the race. As for Piastri, who was right behind his teammate on the grid before the final race, he finished tenth after an early incident with Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen.

Although the gap between McLaren and Ferrari in the constructors’ championship was only 21 points, Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc were unable to overtake the lead, especially since the team was already faced with hurdles at the start of the race. Leclerc received a penalty of 10 Starting places. But the Ferrari drivers both finished on the podium on Sunday, with Sainz (his final race with the team before moving to Williams Racing next year) second and Leclerc third.

Seven-time F1 world drivers’ champion Lewis Hamilton, who drove for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team for the last time on Sunday before moving to Ferrari next year, also overtook teammate George Russell on the final lap to eventually take fourth place.

The last time McLaren won the F1 constructors’ championship was in 1998 with drivers Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard. But after Zak Brown was appointed CEO of McLaren Racing in 2018, he and team boss Andrea Stella are committed to making the team a top competitor again.

Norris joined McLaren in 2019 and made his F1 debut with the team. Piastri made his F1 debut in 2023 after joining McLaren as a reserve driver the year before. And after several years of ups and downs, the team came back strong this year, with both Norris and Piastri taking their first F1 victories of the year at the Miami Grand Prix and the Hungarian Grand Prix respectively.

In total, McLaren achieved 20 podiums this year, including Norris, who took first place in four races this season, and Piastri in two.

Earlier this season, Norris chatted with The Hollywood Reporter and reflected on everything he accomplished with the team this year.

“Even after three, four, five races we thought, ‘Yeah, we still have a lot of work to do.’ But we did it!” he said THRbefore the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November. “We worked hard and improved in many areas so we were the most competitive team this year. … But it’s definitely not easier, and if anything it’s harder because you’re competing against the best of the best who have been in this position a lot longer than us.”

According to the statement, the constructors’ title also comes with a big financial reward for the teams The Associated Press. Although the prize money varies, it is typically worth around $140 million.

At the start of this season, Verstappen also won his fourth drivers’ world championship title.
