Meghan Markle is returning to Instagram five years after stepping down from the royal role

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, started 2025 with a return to her past.

Prince Harry’s wife returned to Instagram on Wednesday, where she amassed a following of millions before her wedding in 2018.

The first post on Meghan’s new account, simply @meghan, is a video of her walking toward the water on the beach and writing “2025” in the sand before walking away from the camera.

ABC News understands the video was shot by Harry on a public beach near the couple’s home in Montecito, California, where they live with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

Earlier this year, Meghan opened another Instagram account under the name @AmericanRivieraOrchard. This account was launched with multiple posts on its grid to show a larger image of a logo for what appears to be a new project. However, it has not been active since the original posts in March.

Meghan’s return to Instagram under her own name comes nearly five years after she and Harry closed their Instagram account @sussexroyal after stepping down from their senior positions in the British royal family and no longer using the Sussex Royal brand.

When the Sussexes opened their @sussexroyal account in 2019, they quickly broke a world record for the fastest time according to Guinness World Records and gained one million followers on Instagram.

Before her relationship with Harry, Meghan frequently posted photos of her home, dogs, travel and food on her personal Instagram account, which she closed a few months before her wedding in May 2018.

The former Suits star was also the author of The Tig blog, which she closed in 2017 as her romance with Harry became even more serious.

“It was a big adjustment – a huge adjustment to go from that kind of autonomy to a different life,” she said of that period of her life in an interview with The Cut in 2022.

Since leaving their royal duties in 2020, both Harry and Meghan have spoken publicly about the dangers of social media, particularly for young people.

In 2021, Harry denied a report that he and Meghan had quit social media for good, adding that he had seen how the platforms can provide “a means of connection and community, which is vital to us as human beings.”

“We will revisit social media when it feels right to us – perhaps when we see more meaningful commitments to change or reform – but for now we have put much of our energy into learning more about this area and to find out how we can help.” Harry told Fast Company.
