Men’s Hockey Falls in midweek matchup against Alaska-Anchorage

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (December 4, 2024) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team fell to Alaska-Anchorage in a 4-1 decision on Wednesday night at Bridgewater Ice Arena. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 6-12 overall, while the Seawolves improved to 3-10-2 on the year.

How it happened

After a back-and-forth start to midweek play in which neither team was able to maintain possession in the offensive zone, Alaska-Anchorage broke through and scored the game’s first goal at 8:08 of the first period . Schimek receives a pass from Junior in the high slot Conor Cole, blasted a shot through traffic and into the net for his first goal of the season, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 lead midway through the first frame.

Alaska-Anchorage doubled its lead less than five minutes later at 12:38 of the quarter. Contreras recovered a loose puck in the neutral zone, raced down the ice on a breakaway and scored the winning goal.

Stonehill earned its first power play opportunity early in the second period at 7:09. Despite a two-minute lead and two shot attempts, the Skyhawks were stifled by the Seawolves’ penalty kill. Just over two minutes after the Stonehill power play ended, Alaska-Anchorage scored again. At 12:20 of the second period, after a successful entry into the offensive zone, Junior Matt Johnson The pass went to Edwards in the middle of the ice, who then whistled a shot under the crossbar and into the net, giving the Seawolves a commanding 3-0 lead early in the third period.

Stonehill tried to gain momentum in the third round and was able to close the gap early on. After a shot from Mannion along the far boards, Lehtinen was in the lead and took advantage of the rebound by sending a backhander over Orosz’s pads, increasing the score to 3-1 in favor of Alaska-Anchorage.

Midway through the final frame, the Skyhawks continued to apply pressure, firing seven shots on goal in four minutes. The Seawolves defense held firm, however, and as time expired, Johnson sealed the victory with an unanswered goal, giving Alaska-Anchorage a 4-1 victory.

Stonehill (6-12-0) returns to action this weekend, traveling to Orono, Maine for a two-game set against the nationally ranked No. 5 University of Maine. Puck drop for Saturday’s series opener between the Skyhawks and Black Bears is scheduled for 2 p.m.
