Metro Detroit is experiencing a wintry mix ahead of Christmas

DETROIT – There is still a bit of wintry chaos expected for the rest of Monday, but things should improve as we head into Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

A mix of rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected in Metro Detroit for the remainder of this Monday. The rain will likely be along and south of I-94, the snow north of M-59, and in between we have the best chance of seeing a mix of everything from time to time until about 7 p.m

After about 7 p.m. we will begin seeing snow across most of Southeast Michigan, with rain chances again limited to the southern portion of the area. This all continues until 10pm and should then slowly subside.

With snow falling this evening, some of us can expect some accumulation. Snow depths of half an inch to 3 inches are expected, with less in the south and more near the Thumb.

Most of Metro Detroit will be about 1″, maybe 2″.

Due to this wintry mess, most of the Detroit metropolitan area is under a winter weather advisory for the remainder of this Monday.

Monroe and Wayne counties are exempt because impacts in those areas are expected to be significantly less.

Tuesday

Rainfall stops later tonight and we dry out as we approach daybreak on Tuesday. Temperatures will remain consistently near the freezing mark overnight.

Christmas Eve is expected to be a fairly quiet day with cloudy skies and high temperatures around 30 degrees. This forecast can be copied and pasted for Christmas Day as we expect slightly warmer temperatures.

Rest of the week

It gets really warm later in the week. Over the weekend, high temperatures will be closer to 50 degrees again, around 15 degrees above the level we should reach this time of year.

The trade-off with warmth is the chance that it will rain again. Keep umbrellas handy on both Saturday and Sunday as we expect torrential rain on both days.
