Metro Detroit Road Conditions: Use caution when driving in snow squalls

Wednesday’s weather could lead to dangerous road conditions for drivers in the Detroit metropolitan area as a snowstorm moves into the area through Thursday.

Winter weather sets in late afternoon and continues through Thursday. Southeast Michigan is only expected to get about an inch of snow, but it’s not the accumulation that’s making roads dangerous, but the way the snow falls.

Heavy snowfall combined with falling temperatures is causing chaos on the roads, especially during the night hours when snow squalls are most likely in the area.

According to the NWS, visibility could drop to near zero with rapid, heavy snowfall. The greatest danger for drivers is on highways.

Icy roads are also a problem. Flash frost is possible if snow falls quickly as temperatures drop.

Drivers on the highway during a snow squall are advised to exit at the nearest exit. If this is not possible, slow down, turn on your headlights and hazard lights, and increase your following distance while staying in your lane. Be sure to avoid hitting the brakes.

FOX 2 will update this story as the weather progresses.
