Metro Detroit Weather: Quiet day before snow returns – how much to expect?

We’re stuck in the middle of yesterday’s 50° temperatures and Thursday’s 22° temperatures… and a lot is happening in between!

Tuesday marks a transition day with calmer weather and reasonable temperatures. Light drizzle may occur in some areas during the morning hours, particularly in locations to the south (Monroe and Lenawee Counties). However, we do not expect any heavy rain. Temperatures will rise to 44° this afternoon under cloudy skies.

Another Canadian clipper system will pass through our region on Wednesday. This means that the wind will become stronger, the temperatures will drop and it will start to snow. Some snowflakes could begin early Wednesday, but the bulk of the activity is expected in the afternoon, evening and night hours. High temperatures on Wednesday will be around 36° while winds will increase to around 30 mph during the afternoon. Of course, this means that the wind plays a role and it gets significantly colder in the afternoon.

Snowfall forecasts are difficult in this case because they are tied solely to snow squalls from the western side of the state. We can give a general range of 1 to 2 inches for Southeast Michigan, but unless you are under a snow squall, your totals will be significantly lower. However, if you find yourself under one of the snow squalls, there is a chance that totals will accumulate a little faster, meaning some places could get closer to 3 inches locally, but this is more true for areas near Lansing.

Thursday’s snow flurries will continue into the day as highs will only reach 22°C, but with the gusty wind it will feel more like single digits. Hello again, winter weather!
