Miami Athletic defrocks CFP committee

Miami’s impressive season resulted in them being in the College Football Playoff for most of the season.

But after the big loss to Syracuse, they are now on the outside following the unveiling of the rankings/bracket on Tuesday, in which the Hurricanes became the first team to be eliminated.

That news didn’t sit well with Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich, who seemed completely taken aback by the latest playoff picture.

What particularly stood out to him was that Miami – which was ranked 12th but was the last team eliminated – trailed Alabama, the first team ranked 11th, with three losses.

Arizona State, ranked 15th, would theoretically finish in 12th place as an automatic Big 12 qualifier if it wins the conference championship game.

Really? which just brought UGA to 8OT,” he wrote

The potentially fatal blow for Miami was a 42-38 road loss over the weekend to No. 22 Syracuse that will now likely keep them out of the 12-team playoffs.

This comes amid Miami’s first 10-win season since 2017, as it appeared almost on track to reach the postseason.

Now, according to the chairman of the CFP selection committee, there isn’t much left for Miami to do.

“For any team that is not playing right now, we don’t have a data point to rerank those teams’ rankings, and that depends on how we see them heading into the final week of championship week,” CFP Chairman Warde Manuel said selection committee said on ESPN. “Nothing will change for us if we evaluate them differently than before.

“The teams that are not playing cannot be adjusted compared to other teams that are not playing. However, for championship teams (game teams), we will evaluate that data point to determine if there needs to be a movement in how the game’s performance is going.”

Along the same lines as Radakovich, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement Tuesday that he did not agree with Miami being left out of the expanded playoffs.

While Phillips was happy to see SMU finish at No. 8, he didn’t agree with the Hurricanes outside the bracket.

“Miami has more wins and fewer losses than the team directly in front of them and a dominant win over an SEC team whose late-season momentum includes a win over No. 13 Ole Miss,” Phillips said in a statement. “Furthermore, with two losses by a total of nine points — against a ranked Syracuse team and a Georgia Tech team that just took No. 5 Georgia to eight overtimes — Miami absolutely deserves more from the committee.

“As we look at the final rankings, we hope the committee will reconsider and send a deserving Miami into the field. We will continue to look forward to this weekend when Clemson and SMU have the opportunity to win an ACC Championship and represent the conference in the CFP!”
