Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel explains the decision to waive Odell Beckham Jr.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel answered many injury-related questions as usual on Friday, but his session this week also included plenty of questions from Odell Beckham Jr.

That was to be expected after the Dolphins made the headline-grabbing move of waiving the veteran wide receiver earlier in the day, and McDaniel complied despite being at a point where he wanted to move on to other matters.

After three earlier questions about Beckham, a question about Patrick Paul was followed by another about OBJ and whether McDaniel regretted the Dolphins signing him.

“No, no regrets,” McDaniel said. “My only regret is that we don’t talk about the Texans anymore.”

The Dolphins will of course face the Houston Texans on Sunday.

On whether it was a mutual farewell, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports: “Yes, the discussions led us to the conclusion that it was best for both sides. Odell and I have been very communicating since he’s been here. He had a difficult start because he had to recover heading into the season and then he just had to see. “Simple: what’s the best future for him and the team and we just thought it would be a good one Time to go in that direction, that’s all.”

On the question of whether the move was initiated by Beckham and/or his representatives: “No, it’s just our professional communication. He is a professional who has been busy chopping wood and I know his expectations. So if you communicate transparently, I can kind of know where he stands, and normal communication has kind of led us in that direction, the best, the best for both sides, really.”

On the question of whether Beckham’s absence from training on Wednesday and Thursday was excused and related to the move: “I don’t think I really need to get into the timelines and the nuances that we discussed and we both agree and I wish him the best and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for him.”

What McDaniel didn’t say, and what he shouldn’t be expected to say, is that the Dolphins would have kept him if they believed Beckham could make a significant difference down the stretch.

The Dolphins didn’t move Calais Campbell at the NFL trade deadline because they felt like they needed him to turn their season around, and that move has proven to be a very wise one.

Beckham didn’t make an impact during his time with the Dolphins, so in this case there was no reason or need to keep him around if he wanted his release.

McDaniel wouldn’t have said anything out of place if he’d mentioned that there’s no reason to keep Beckham regardless of his wishes – after all, he was under contract – but that’s just not his style. Plus, the facts and what we saw on the field said it all.
