Miami (OH) vs. Colorado State Prediction

The Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl? On the CW network? Yes, that’s right – the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl on the CW Network. This real version of a Mad Lib could actually make a good game in the desert. The RedHawks have been one of the better teams in the MAC this season and the Rams have one of the most talented Group of Five squads in college football. So as far as smaller bowl games go, this one should be pretty fun.

However, unsubscribes and transfers are no fun, and there are a lot of them. Miami lost two starters to Texas Tech, Will Jados and Reggie Virgil moved to the Red Raiders. The RedHawks are also without Javon Tracy, who is headed to Minnesota, and cornerback Raion Strader, their best defensive player, is heading to Auburn. It’s also unclear whether Cade McDonald or Reid Holskey will play, as both are opt-out options. Additionally, Dylan Downing is injured and Mychal Yharbrough is out this year. The latter is worrying as it involves another corner. Will Miami be able to compete in the secondary?

For Colorado State, starters Buom Jock, Mukendi Wa-Kalonji and Nuer Gatkouth all transfer and will miss this game on the defensive side of the ball. The team will also be without wideout Caleb Goodie, who is headed to Cincinnati. This hurts because star wide receiver Tory Horton is out for the season. And starting player Drew Moss may not play here.

The losses on both sides are pretty brutal here, but I have a better feeling about the way Colorado State will take the field. I know the Rams will be missing some key wideouts, but Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is a highly talented quarterback. He should be able to make good decisions against this RedHawks secondary. Miami has actually been solid against the pass this season, ranking 45th nationally in dropback EPA per play allowed (-0.024). But Strader had a big part in it. And he’s not the only missing starting defender. So Fowler-Nicolosi should really be able to make some plays with his arm, and he’s always a threat with his legs.

Of course, Colorado State has to find a way to not get torched when Miami has the ball. That’s not a given, considering the Rams ranked just 107th nationally in dropback EPA per game allowed (.057) this year. But the RedHawks ranked just 68th in dropback EPA per game this season (-0.004), so there’s no guarantee Brett Gabbert can take advantage of the matchup.

The RedHawks are just 1-3 both head-to-head and against non-conference opponents this year, so it’s difficult to trust them outside of #MACtion. The team is also just 1-4 SU in bowl games under Chuck Martin, but Jay Norvell is 2-1 in bowl games in December of his career. And overall, I think Norvell is the more dangerous coach because of the extra preparation time. He’s a good offensive coach, so he’ll likely have his unproven group of wideouts ready to go.

You could also try playing Over in this game. The total is currently absurdly low, and these offenses certainly have the opportunity to rack up points. The only place I’m most confident is Colorado State, as I don’t think Miami can produce as many key plays on offense.

Pick: Colorado State +3 (-112)
