Michael Lombardi reunites with Bill Belichick as North Carolina GM

Bill Belichick already has a familiar face joining him in Chapel Hill.

Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi is leaving his job as VSiN host to become general manager of the University of North Carolina football program, the sports betting network announced Wednesday night.

The news comes hours after Belichick agreed to become the Tar Heels’ next head coach.

“I’m excited to join Coach Belichick at North Carolina,” Lombardi told VSiN. “Although it will be difficult to leave my VSIN family, I look forward to helping build a successful program again. I am forever grateful to all the great people at VSIN, especially Bill Adee and the Musburger family.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Lombardi was “essential” in bringing Belichick to UNC.

Lombardi, who once worked as a recruiting coordinator for UNLV, has long been a front-office face in the NFL, and unsurprisingly, his last job in the league came with the Patriots and Belichick as an assistant to the coaching staff for New England.

The two had previously worked together in Cleveland when Belichick was the Browns’ head coach while Lombardi served as pro personnel director and director of player personnel.

While working for the NFL team, he won three Super Bowl titles, two of them with Belichick and the Patriots.

Most recently, Belichick and Lombardi worked together – with former Patriots assistant Matt Patricia – on the “Coach” podcast.

Belichick, who signed a five-year contract, said in a statement that he was excited to put the Tar Heels football program on the map.

“I am excited about the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured that time. I have always wanted to coach in college and now I am excited to build the football program at Chapel Hill.”
