Michael Lombardi will follow Bill Belichick to UNC as GM of the program

Bill Belichick is bringing the gang back together.

First and foremost is Michael Lombardi. The NFL personnel manager and media personality will join Belichick in North Carolina as general manager of the program. Lombardi most recently worked for VSiN.

From 1984 to 2007 he worked for several NFL teams. After an initial media appearance, he became GM of the Browns in 2013.

He was an assistant coach at New England from 2014 to 2016. He then returned to media work.

Unlike Belichick, Lombardi has college experience. He was recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 1981 to 1984.

He is the newest college football GM. Recently, Stanford hired Andrew Luck for this role.

Lombardi did a podcast with Belichick this season. Last week, Lombardi explained that Belichick was serious about making the jump to college football, in part because of the fact that too many NFL teams are dysfunctional. “Where are the great jobs?“said Lombardi. He indirectly addressed the Jaguars’ chief football strategy officer, Tony Khan, saying, “There are sons of owners running the analytics department.”

Belichick could soon add more former lieutenants, including assistant coaches Matt Patricia, Joe Judge and Josh McDaniels, to name a few.
