Michelle Buteau criticizes Dave Chappelle’s trans jokes in the Netflix special

Michelle Buteau criticized Dave Chappelle and his controversial jokes about the transgender community in her new comedy special “Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” which premiered Tuesday on Netflix.

Buteau began criticizing Chappelle after he told a story about her “black lesbian friend.” She noted that the topic drew mixed reactions from the crowd, some laughing and others uncomfortable, but emphasized that comedians should be able to “tell jokes and stories and not disparage an entire community.”

“We can do that. We can make it fun,” Buteau said. “We just have to work on it, right? So if you ever meet Dave Chappelle, can you tell him? I don’t think he knows this shit.”

Buteau then jokingly referred to Chappelle as “the Goat,” an acronym that usually means “the greatest of all time.” However, in Chappelle’s case, Buteau said “GOAT” means “go after transsexuals.”

“I can’t believe that someone would make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel unsafe. I really think that’s so wild,” Buteau continued. “I’m manifesting this shit tonight. This is a takeover of Radio City Music Hall and I will tell everyone that I want to make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel safe, seen, secure, heard and entertained.”

Never one to shy away from sharp humor, Chappelle came under fire in 2021 after targeting the trans community in his Netflix special “The Closer.” Despite the intense backlash, Chappelle doubled down on his follow-up special, “The Dreamer,” refusing to stop with the jokes.
