Bowl games will be decided on Sunday, December 8, after the College Football Playoff Committee announces the field for the inaugural 12-team playoffs. After that, bowling will officially begin with the announcement of the agreements.

How do bowls select teams in college football?

Bowls are allowed to select teams based on their own criteria. A brand’s appeal is often a primary factor in selection. Michigan is one of the most watched games in the country every year and could theoretically move up to a higher league. Geography and matchup attractiveness are also a factor.

UM is ranked seventh among 18 teams in the Big Ten standings. Currently, No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Indiana are in the CFP, although the Buckeyes lose at home to unranked UM and potentially put the Hoosiers in trouble. OSU defeated Indiana 38-15 last week and expects to remain atop the rankings despite two losses to IU.

The new CFP rankings will be released Tuesday at 7 p.m. ahead of the conference championship games.

Illinois (9-3) and Iowa (8-4) are also ahead of UM and would be on their way to higher tier bowls. That works Michigan may go to Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina, or even Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee, when Indiana leaves the CFP. UM could also jump into that ReliaQuest bowl in Tampa, Florida before Iowa.

Who will Michigan play in the 2024 bowl game?

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina will take place on Friday, January 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, and will be played against an ACC team.

The Music City Bowl will take place on Monday, December 30, at 2:30 p.m. at Nissan Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, and will feature a Big Ten vs. SEC game. This is the SEC’s fifth ranked bowl compared to the No. 4 Big Ten Bowl. With three SEC teams potentially participating in the CFP, that likely leaves only the eighth SEC team in the Music City Bowl. That team could be LSU (8-4) or Texas A&M (8-4).
