Michigan football QB Davis Warren talks to JJ McCarthy for tips against Ohio State

One player who knows a thing or two about beating Michigan’s arch-rival Ohio State is former Wolverine star JJ McCarthy. The three-year Michigan quarterback was 3-0 against Ohio State and 2-0 as the starting signal-caller. He beat the Buckeyes in Columbus in 1922 and did it again in the Big House last year.

McCarthy didn’t do it alone, he had plenty of help between the running backs, the Michigan defense and the Wolverines’ all-powerful offensive line. But it’s no surprise that Michigan quarterback Davis Warren told reporters on Monday that he would contact McCarthy this week to get some tips on how to face the Buckeyes in his first game against Ohio State could.

“Absolutely,” Warren began. “When I was a rookie and had that win in ’21 – I’m looking at the pictures right now. This was truly an experience for the ages for us as a program. And then these last two years where I really dominated both of them. 22, go down there and get the win and then last year got the win up here.

“It really starts with the guys at the top, the big guys. They know how we’ve won the game the last few years, which is what matters. And I think they’re confident they can do it.”

“I’m sure a lot of them will, just like I’ll be speaking to JJ this week to get some tips and tricks. I know they’ve spoken to and will continue to speak to the boys who have moved on. “I think the confidence will show on Saturday.”

Averaging 140.1 yards per game through the air, the Wolverines currently have the 128th ranked passing offense in the country. While that’s not a good thing in today’s college football era, Warren has started to come into his own since regaining his lost starting job. Last week against the Wildcats, Warren threw for nearly 200 yards and since the Michigan State game he has thrown four touchdowns with just one interception.

Warren says Michigan will be fully prepared for Saturday’s game against Ohio State and the key is to go out and have fun, play with details – and stay loose.

“The last couple years have definitely shown that, like Coach Moore said,” Warren said of the Wolverines’ passing attack. “As a group, as a passing attack, we are ready for the challenge and we are prepared. And we’re going to be ready for the opportunity and go out there, play with details, have fun and take it easy.”

“I think that’s something JJ did great, especially in 2022, and we did a great job of making some explosive passing plays. Those were great plays in the game. So we’ll solidify ourselves in the work this week and in film study and preparation.”

With the Wolverines at 6-5 this year, there won’t be a fourth straight Big Ten title or a berth in the College Football Playoff. But Michigan can still accomplish one of its goals if it can somehow upset the Buckeyes as a nearly three-touchdown underdog. Michigan’s national championship is Saturday in Columbus.

“Whether we were 1-10 or 11-0 at that point, a win over Ohio State is a win over Ohio State,” the Michigan starting quarterback said. “That’s one of our goals for this year, isn’t it? Beating our rivals, qualifying for the bowl, winning those trophy games and then a Big Ten Championship, a national championship. These are the goals every year. And beating Ohio State is on that list.”
