The Michigan Wolverines ended 2024 the same way they started it: with a win over Alabama.

Michigan defeated the Crimson Tide on New Year’s Eve in the ReliaQuest Bowl at Raymond James Stadium, ending their season on a three-game winning streak that included an upset of rival Ohio State.

The 19-13 win comes almost a year after Michigan defeated Alabama in overtime in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day to advance to the national championship game, where Jim Harabugh and JJ McCarthy would lead the Wolverines to victory before heading to the NFL.

Alabama was disappointed to be left out of the expanded 12-team CFP field and entered Tuesday’s bowl game as the favorite. But Michigan’s defense, led by the former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, took Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe out of action, sacked him five times and forced three turnovers.

Dominic Zvada kicked four field goals and Davis Warren threw a touchdown pass to Fredrick Moore in the first half, but it was Michigan’s defense that secured the victory.

Alabama had a chance to win it on the final drive, but Milroe was picked off in the red zone on fourth-and-10. He finished 16 of 32 for 192 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.
