Middletown man charged with drunk driving for 11th time | The latest from WDEL News

A Middletown man is facing his 11th drunken driving arrest after colliding with an occupied police vehicle.

New Castle County police said an officer was stopped at a red light at Bayview Road and Route 13 Sunday afternoon when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The driver continued driving, but the officer followed him into a parking lot.

According to police, 53-year-old James Thorpe appeared impaired and was taken into custody. He has nine previous drunk driving convictions. Thorpe’s most recent arrest came last month. The case is still pending.

Thorpe was held at the Young R. Young Correctional Institution on the following charges:

-A criminal offense: driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol

– A criminal offense for disobeying a police signal.

-An offense for failure to comply with the terms of the recognizance bond or conditions

– One misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of a property collision accident

– A charge of driving while suspended or revoked.

-A traffic violation of the turning restrictions.

-A traffic violation for failure to signal.

Bail for Thorpe was set at $36,200 cash.
