Mikaela Shiffrin falls on her first attempt to win her 100th World Cup

No. 100 has to wait for Mikaela Shiffrin.

Shiffrin fell during the second run of a giant slalom in Killington, Vermont, on Saturday. When she was in the lead after the first run, she became unbalanced and lost her lead, falling over and sliding to the side. She ran into a gate and then crashed into the safety net on the side of the hill.

She lay there for several minutes while security personnel rushed over to check on her. Her condition was not immediately clear, nor was her status for Sunday’s slalom race in Killington.

It is only the fifth time in her career that Shiffrin has failed to finish a giant slalom race, bringing a shocking end to a day that began so promisingly.
