Mike Johnson is re-elected speaker of the House of Representatives as the threat of Republican mutiny dissipates

Speaker-elect Mike Johnson, R-La., was re-elected as House leader on Friday.

The Louisiana Republican won along party lines on the first ballot, a stark contrast to his predecessor’s drawn-out 15-round battle in 2023.

This comes despite saber rattling by some conservatives who threatened to withhold support for Johnson in protest over his handling of government appropriations and several other issues in the 118th Congress.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to oust Johnson last year, was the speaker-elect’s most vocal critic ahead of Friday’s vote.

He told former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., on his new show One America News Network: “You can rip out all my fingernails, you can shove bamboo in them, you can start cutting my fingers off.”

“I’m not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow, and you can take that to the bank,” Massie said.

Other critics included members of the House Freedom Caucus such as Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, who has expressed interest in chairing the influential House Rules Committee, the body that sets the conditions for full House votes on legislation.

Johnson’s allies warned in return that a prolonged dispute over House speakers could delay the joint session of Congress scheduled for January 6 to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

Johnson also had a key supporter in Trump, who stressed his support for the GOP leader hours before the noon vote.

“Good luck today to Speaker Mike Johnson, a great man with great ability who is on the verge of receiving 100% support. A win for Mike today would be a major victory for the Republican Party and further recognition of our 129 years in power.

In response, Johnson wrote down

His victory marks the start of his first full term as speaker. Johnson won the gavel in October 2023 after three weeks of closed-door talks following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
