Mike McCarthy is no longer coach of the Dallas Cowboys after five seasons

After months of speculation, Mike McCarthy will not be returning to the Dallas Cowboys.

With McCarthy’s contract expiring Tuesday, the coach and team will part ways rather than work on an extension, a person with knowledge of the move told Jarrett Bell of USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side had yet announced the decision. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the news.

McCarthy now has the opportunity to talk to other teams after the Cowboys rejected the Chicago Bears’ request to talk to the coach about their vacancy last week.

McCarthy finished his tenure with the Cowboys with a 49-35 record and three postseason appearances in five seasons, including a 7-10 record in his senior year.

Amid speculation that he might take a job with another franchise given his expiring contract, McCarthy said after the loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 18 that he preferred to stay with Dallas.

“Absolutely. I’ve invested a lot here, and the Cowboys have invested a lot in me,” McCarthy said. “And then there’s a personal side to all of these decisions. They’re all pointing in the right direction. I think whenever you Your time, your energy, your faith, the connections you have, the relationships that exist here, the understanding of what the organization can do and is willing to do, those are all positive qualities that you take into account.”

McCarthy’s reputation was under scrutiny for nearly a year as Jerry Jones decided to bring the coach back for the final season of his contract despite suffering a resounding wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers last January. However, he did not offer an extension and stated that the franchise would be “all in” for 2024 after the team failed to break the then-28-year drought of reaching the NFC Championship game in three straight 12-win seasons to break through.

Still, the Cowboys suffered serious setbacks early on, as the organization’s 16 regular-season home wins turned into five losses at AT&T Stadium early in the season. The 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 6 was the largest loss in a home game of Jones’ tenure as owner.
