Mike Tomlin expects Russell Wilson to “respond” after game with two turnovers

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson had two costly turnovers in the team’s 34-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16, but Mike Tomlin doesn’t expect the veteran to dwell on it. During his weekly press conference before the team’s Week 17 game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day, Tomlin said he expected Wilson to “respond” and that his approach wouldn’t be a problem before Wednesday.

“He’s been doing this for a long time and he’s hard on himself because he has a desire to be great. He wants to lead us to victory, and that is his own. But I don’t expect it to be an issue this week in terms of his approach and readiness,” Tomlin said Sunday via the team’s YouTube channel.

Wilson’s two turnovers came at crucial moments, with a fumble inside the Baltimore 5-yard line after attempting to score a touchdown and an interception that turned into a pick-six down with the Steelers 24 Down -17 after they had just intercepted Lamar Jackson. With the Steelers short-handed, losing offensive tackle George Pickens and four defensive starters after CB Joey Porter Jr. left the game with an injury, Wilson tried to make a play by scoring instead of going to the 5 slide. He got popped by S Ar’. Darius Washington, and that loss of the ball changed the dynamic of the entire game.

But for someone who has been in the league a long time and has performed worse than he did against the Ravens, Wilson is used to turning his attention to the next game. He admitted that the turnovers changed the game, and while he may not be happy with himself, he knows that with the matchup against the Chiefs looming, he needs to move on and prepare to face the top team in the AFC.

The Steelers are still controlling their own destiny when it comes to winning the AFC North, and Wilson remains optimistic about the team’s chances. A win on Wednesday would go a long way toward helping the Steelers win the division. While it’s not ideal to lose to the Ravens and then have to forfeit a short week, having an experienced quarterback like Wilson is important in situations like this, and Tomlin has no doubt he’ll be ready to get going and to have his boys ready to go.

Even though there won’t be a lot of time and work during practice to get in, Wilson’s mental ability to keep going will be crucial and hopefully he’ll have George Pickens back. That would help the Steelers’ offense and not make Wilson feel like he has to do everything himself.
