Mike Tomlin explains why he didn’t use Russell Wilson for Justin Fields

PITTSBURGH – Mike Tomlin says he never considered moving on to Justin Fields while Russell Wilson struggles. Fields returned from an abdominal injury on Saturday to become the team’s backup, and entering the fourth quarter the Steelers had just 91 yards of total offense.

So what really stopped Tomlin from returning to Fields with Wilson on the ropes?

“Not really, no,” Tomlin said when asked if he was thinking about benching Wilson for Fields. “Honesty, because our mistakes were collective, and I think the wisest thing for us at this point was to stick with whoever was on the field and work through it.”

Wilson finished the day with 148 passing yards, one touchdown on 31 pass attempts and just 17 completions. That’s not good enough, and Wilson has struggled the last four weeks, including this one. Fields, on the other hand, had been injured most of the time, but had been sidelined since Wilson took over against the New York Jets.

Either way, it certainly doesn’t sound like the Steelers plan on changing quarterbacks before Wild Card Week, whether their game is against the Houston Texans or the Baltimore Ravens.
