An injury-time goal from Tammy Abraham completed a stunning comeback for AC Milan, who won the Italian Super Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over city rivals Inter Milan in Monday’s final in Riyadh, after scoring twice early in the game had a backlog.

United States star Christian Pulisic scored the goal to put Milan level with their city rivals at Al-Awwal Park and then played the crucial pass to unlock Inter’s defense after Abraham’s winner.

The victory denied Inter an unprecedented fourth consecutive Super Cup title and allowed Milan to repeat Inter’s eight wins in the competition with new coach Serge Conceicao lifting a trophy in his second game as manager.

“The team has character, they managed to win games against two great teams in the end,” Conceicao told Mediaset. “At halftime the coach has to change certain things, that’s what they pay me for.”

The game was preceded by a spectacular light show at the King Saud University Stadium, but the game only really came to life in the final seconds of the first half.

Mehdi Taremi fed Lautaro Martínez with a pass across the box and the striker deceived Malick Thiaw with deft footwork before firing a low shot through the legs of Theo Hernández, who beat Mike Maignan at his near post.

Two minutes after the break, Inter picked up where they left off. Stefan de Vrij played a long ball over the top which Taremi controlled beautifully and he curled his shot into the bottom corner to double the lead.

Milan responded by subbing in Rafael Leão, who immediately won a free kick just outside the penalty area, which Hernandez curled low around the wall and sneaked just under the post to reopen the tie.

The resurgent Milan pushed for an equalizer. A shot from Tijjani Reijnders was deflected off the face of Alessandro Bastoni and Inter keeper Yann Sommer brilliantly parried a header from Álvaro Morata.

Inter then had a chance to restore their two-goal lead, but Carlos Augusto’s header from close range came off the post and landed on the goal line in the arms of Maignan, but Milan equalized ten minutes from time.

Pulisic, surrounded by three Inter players, controlled a cross from Hernandez and directed his shot into the far corner and it looked as if the tie would be decided by a penalty shootout with no extra time to play.

However, Milan continued to press and were rewarded when Leao pulled the ball back across goal and Abraham, another substitute, was there to break Inter’s hearts with a simple pass.

“We played with confidence, courage and hunger,” Abraham said. “We are a strong team.”

Conceicao, who replaced the sacked Paulo Fonseca last week, celebrated wildly with his players as the Inter team sank to the ground in disbelief.

“It is also our fault that Fonseca was fired,” said Hernandez, who often clashed with Fonseca. “We didn’t have much time to work together (with Conceicao), but in that short time it went well.”
