Missing Texas Rep. Kay Granger found in memorial ward: report

An elderly Texas congressman who has been missing from the Capitol for six months has been found at a nursing home that specializes in memory care, according to a report.

Longtime Republican Representative Kay Granger, 81, has not cast a vote in Washington DC since July – despite the GOP’s extremely narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

Her extended absence sparked concern among voters in Texas’ 12th Congressional District, which lies in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Granger did not run for re-election in November, but her disappearance is particularly significant given Republicans’ slim majority in the House of Representatives – and the massive votes that took place in the final days of her term, including on the government spending bill.

After calls to Granger’s office went to voicemail and her constituency office was found empty, a Dallas Express reporter received a tip that she had been staying at a memory care facility after being found lost and confused while walking through her neighborhood was.

Dallas Express reporters who visited the facility to confirm Granger’s residency and inquire about how she planned to vote on the budget bill were not allowed to speak with the congresswoman, according to the publication.

However, employees confirmed that Granger lived at the facility, the Express reported.

Taylor Manziel, assistant manager of the senior living facility, told the outlet, “This is her home.”

Local officials expressed disappointment over Granger’s conspicuous absence from Washington after representing her district since 1997.

Tarrant County Republican Bo French said the lack of representation during a crucial voting period in Congress is “troubling to say the least.”

“At a time of extraordinarily important votes, including debt ceiling, disaster relief, farm bills and border issues, Kay Granger is nowhere to be found. The margin in Congress is razor-thin and the lack of a Republican voice representing CD-12 disenfranchises 2 million people. We deserve better,” French said.

Rolando Garcia, a member of the state’s Republican Executive Committee, said it was a “sad and humiliating way” for Granger to end her 30-year political career, which included serving as mayor of Fort Worth.

“The fact that Kay Granger cannot leave her nursing home to take part in the most important congressional vote of the year suggests that she was already in visible decline when she ran for re-election in 2022,” Garcia wrote on X .

“A sad and humiliating way to end her political career.” Sad that no one cared enough to “take away the keys” from her before she reached this moment. And a sad commentary on Congress gerontocracy,” he added.

Granger’s constituents also expressed concern about the lack of representation and suggested that Congresswoman-elect Craig Goldman, who won her seat in November, take office early.

“We need someone there with all capacities. Engage Craig early. This is the solution. This is the right thing to do. She just missed a big vote, it wasn’t a win/loss vote, but we still have to protect our country, it’s not about hurt feelings. She is a public servant, we have thanked her for her service, but now she must resign,” Tarrant County resident Hollie Plemons told the Express.

Granger and her employees will remain on taxpayer payrolls through January 3rd.
