Missing woman ‘disappeared voluntarily’, police say – after her father took his own life when he couldn’t find her | US News

A missing woman whose father committed suicide after failing to find her disappeared voluntarily, police said.

Hannah Kobayashi, 30, missed a connecting flight from Hawaii to New York in Los Angeles on November 8 and disappeared days later after sending “alarming” text messages to her family.

Her father, Ryan, followed in her footsteps with relatives and volunteers, but did found dead in a parking lot near a Los Angeles airport on November 24th.

Overnight, police said Hannah wanted to “distance from modern connectivity” and was last seen entering Mexico with her luggage.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said there was no evidence that Hannah was a victim of human trafficking or a victim of a crime and classified her disappearance as a “voluntary missing person.”

“We basically did everything we could do at that point. She left the country and is now in another country,” he said, adding that she had a right to privacy but should contact her family.

“A simple message could reassure those who care.”

The case remains active until her safety is confirmed and they will be notified when she returns to the U.S., he said.

Hannah was seen near Los Angeles, police said, and asked for her luggage to be sent back from New York. On November 11, she picked it up at the airport and left without her phone.

Investigators found that she had “expressed a desire to move away from modern connectivity.”

Officers have interviewed a man Hannah was seen with on a train, describing him as “cooperative”.

Last week, investigators determined that Hannah had intentionally missed her connecting flight, although her sister Sydni disputed his statement in a social media post.

CCTV images reviewed by police showed her walking alone and unharmed through a tunnel in San Ysidro, 125 miles southwest of Los Angeles, at midday on Nov. 12.

This came after Hannah’s family said they began receiving “strange and cryptic, just alarming” text messages from her before her disappearance.

These messages indicated that she was “intercepted” while boarding a train and was afraid someone would try to steal her identity.

Her aunt Larie Pidgeon said “she went dark” when the family “started pushing.”

Sky News’ US affiliate NBC News reported that one of the text messages received by Hannah’s family said: “I was pretty much tricked into giving away all my money on someone I thought I loved. “

Shortly after the message was sent, her father flew from Hawaii to Los Angeles to search for her for 13 days.

The family said his loss had “immeasurably worsened the family’s suffering.”
