The New York Yankees renewed contract negotiations with free-agent first baseman Christian Walker on Sunday night after losing the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

Joel Sherman from the New York Post exclusively reported on the 33-year-old Walker, a three-time Gold Glover who hit 26 home runs, 84 RBI and an .803 OPS in 130 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

The Yankees have a need at first base after declining their $17 million option on Anthony Rizzo, making him a free agent. New York could call on Ben Rice to fill in for the injured Rizzo, who suffered a broken forearm following a collision on June 16.

But Rice struggled from the court, hitting just .171 (.613 OPS) in 50 games. New York is probably the best place to find an outside option.

Walker seems to be a great fit given his hitting power and defensive prowess. And MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently said that Walker would be a bigger priority for the team than another notable first baseman, former New York Met Pete Alonso. Morosi pointed to the fact that Walker will be on a shorter contract while also noting his defensive abilities.

Walker was also called an “outstanding clubhouse presence,” according to Sherman.

Per Jon Heyman of the New York PostThe Yankees were reportedly willing to spend $760 million over 16 years to retain Soto, who went to the Mets for $765 million over 15 years.

So if the Yankees were willing to pay Soto that much money, then it’s safe to assume they could allocate those funds to other players to fill out their roster.

The money is clearly there for Walker, who is looking to sign a three-year, $60 million deal, according to MLB Trade Rumors. This could end up being a bargain as the Yankees look to improve on their AL pennant season.
