Montgomery Catholic wins flag football state title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WSFA) – It was a comeback that the Montgomery Catholic flag football team has been working toward all year. The Lady Knights made school history on Wednesday by securing their title as the new Alabama High School Athletic Association Super 7 Class 1A/5A flag football champions.

The showdown between the Knights (17-4) and the Moody Blue Devils (17-3) at Protective Stadium began with a 7-0 first-half lead in Moody’s favor when quarterback Emma Kile led Sophie White for a 56- Yard shot scored touchdown pass with 7:20 left before halftime, followed by an extra point from Kile.

Catholic stormed back in the second half when quarterback Hayden Fitts found Fitts receiver Lily Abbott in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:45 left in the quarter. The passing play covered 11 yards, with Fitts scoring the extra point, tying the game 7-7.

Abbott broke the tie with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fitts with 4:02 to play. Fitts hit the extra point again and the Knights finished the game with a 14-7 win.

It was a stark turnaround for Catholic, which lost the Class 1A/5A final 18-13 in overtime to Wenonah last year. Head coach Whitney Toole said the team has worked all year to avoid a repeat.

Toole said the team has been working on improving its game since the day after the Wenonah loss and that Wednesday’s win was “very important” for them.

“They worked all summer, they worked all fall, and no one deserves it more than them,” she said.
